Getting my hair highlighted

Whilst on holiday in Cyprus this year I decided that I wanted to get my hair highlighted. I've only ever dyed my hair once before, which I did myself and to be quite honest it didn't seem to make a jot of difference! I clearly bought a colour that was far too similar to my own hair colour at the time!
Anyway so I decided to get it professionally highlighted when I got home. After having spoken to a couple of friends who'd had it done before, I was  recommended to get it done at Toni and Guy. I decided to follow this advice as I had pretty much no idea where was good or not in terms of hair colouring. I have to say the treatment I received in the salon was really good. I'd 100% recommended it. I was sceptical as I didn't want to spend too much getting it done as I'm a student and off to Uni soon (saving up for freshers week!) but it was well worth the money I paid. I was really pleased with the results and got some added freebies thrown in too. I know I will be revisiting soon!

I told the stylist that I wanted a natural looking effect but wanted it to still be noticeably lighter at the same time - I feel happy with how it turned out! My hair also feels in better condition afterwards... not entirely sure why... but it does so that's an added bonus!

So here are the before and after pictures of my hair - hope you like it as much as I do!

Oh I forgot to mention I got a T-Section!

Hope you like it!

A new blogging topic

This may be primarily a beauty blog but I thought I might jazz things up every now and again with some different content like the post I recently put up on my trip to Bournemouth. Hopefully these kinds of posts will be of interest to you and will help you get to know a little bit more about me.

So in 2 weeks I am moving to Bournemouth to start University studying Psychology. People who've asked me how I feel about this next step have gotten a mixed response, including words such as excited and worried. Although I am excited about the prospect of this it also means I won't be seeing my friends and family as much which is one of the downsides to moving away but I'm sure I'll keep in touch with most of my friends! (fingers and toes crossed!!)

But mostly I am very excited to live in a new place, meet new people and study something that I find fascinating in more depth. I've been thinking about spending the next couple of blog posts talking about things I'm doing in preparation for starting university including what I'm taking, and all sorts of admin-y things that seem very boring yet are oh so important. A blogger friend of mine also suggested that I talk about University life on my blog too, so here we go! Go check out the lovely Sophie's blog she's so pretty and I love reading her blog! Little Bit Soph

This post was just a little update about what I'll be doing in the coming weeks!
I'd love to hear if you are starting University this year or are already and University and have some tips for me and others! Tweet me or leave me a comment below!

Beauty in a flash

I hope I'm not alone in having days where I wake up and want to look like I've made an effort with what I look like, yet really I've done very little. Maybe I'm just lazy but I think we all have even a few days like this even if it's just because were in a rush. So here's my 'I want to look good but have no time/can't really be bothered' essentials!

As much as I love a thick luxurious body butter like the ones from the Body Shop, they take quite a while to sink into the skin and when I want get dressed straight after my morning shower I often don't have the time to wait around for it to do it's thing. So I opt for a quicker easier moisturiser that comes in spray form. I use the Vaseline Spray and Go moisturiser in the cocoa scent, you don't have to mess about with pots of body butter or such like, meaning you save precious time.

If I choose to wear makeup (which I don't always) I stick to something fairly basic. I use the Bourjois 123 Perfect CC Cream for a light but even coverage with added skincare benefits, I apply this with a dampened Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. I then apply a smidge of the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer under my eyes and on any blemishes. As I have combination skin I then powder the T zone and under my eyes to prevent creasing or excess shine throughout the day, for this I use something like the Mac Mineralise Skinfinish Natural in the shade light, any powder will do but I also love the Rimmel Stay Matte Translucent pressed powder. I like a subtle glow without looking like I'm oily which this is perfect for. I then add a little natural looking matte bronzer to the hollows of my face to add some colour back to my pale skin and to add a little definition, I love the Body Shop Honey Bronzer in the shade 02. I tend to wear a tinted lip balm as its quick, easy and very moisturising on the lips, I love the Burts Bees lip balm in Hibiscus.

If I feel like doing anything to my brows I will use the Soap and Glory Brow Archery pencil in the shade Blondeshell to lightly fill in any sparse areas. By this point I'm looking half decent but my eyes still look like they're half asleep! So with a quick coat of mascara and a nude eyeliner in the waterline (optional) I'm ready to head out the door. My holy grail nude liner is the Rimmel Scandaleyes waterproof one and I am loving the Lancôme Hypnose Drama mascara too at the moment.

I'm not that adventurous with hairstyles in general, I'm much more of a makeup girl. So I tend to just leave my hair down or alternatively put it in a pony tail or a messy bun. With a spritz of my favourite perfume I'm ready!

This may not sound like its all that quick, but I can do all of the above in about 5 minutes if I'm in a rush.

Hope you liked this post! Let me know your Beauty in a Flash essentials by tweeting me or leaving a comment below, I'd love to hear from you!

Review: Lancôme Hypnose Drama Mascara

I'd heard amazing reviews of a number of the Lancôme mascaras, but had always been pretty content when it came to high-street brands in terms of mascara. In fact, I think mascara is probably the only makeup category that I've never bought high end up until now, I always seem to find what I'm looking for at Boots or Superdrug. So I always told myself it was pointless spending two, or three times the price on something different when I like ones I have. Well... me being me, I knew I'd cave at some point and it happened to be whilst standing in front of the Lancôme counter at Debenhams.

I've done this before with the Benefit Coralista blusher and Hoola bronzer, I looked and it and swatched it for probably three years, telling myself I loved it, yet somehow always convinced myself I didn't need it each time, until one day, I just knew; it was the day to buy it. Call me sad, but at that point it time, standing next to the beautifully laid out Lancôme counter, it was time for me to buy my first high end mascara.

When it comes down to the type of mascara formulas I love, I have a lot of criteria that it needs to fulfil. If I was asked to describe what my perfect mascara would do it would hold a curl well, lengthen and separates the lashes whilst most importantly adding plenty of volume. Being someone who is also drawn in by beautiful packaging (as I've probably mentioned numerous times now on my blog) I would also look for it to look sleek and elegant, after all with a hefty price tag you wouldn't expect cheap, plain, boring packaging.

Is it too soon to call this my holy grail mascara? I don't know, but it looks like it could well be! (I'll keep you posted if my opinion changes.)

A close up with the mascara only on my right eye.

French pharmacy products

I love the French food and culture, the language and their skincare products are no exception from this list. They are known for being simple yet really effective. I started out by trying some of the La Roche-Posay products (which are now sold in Boots and on Feelunuique.com) as I'd heard many good reviews of the products from top beauty bloggers like Tanya Burr and A Model Recommends as well as from skincare expert Caroline Hirons.

Lets start with probably the most well known product from the brand, Effaclar Duo (+) which is a treatment product for oily, blemish-prone skin. It reduces blemish marks left behind on the skin. Its formulated for sensitive skin too meaning that it is very gentle. This is fast becoming a holy grail skincare product for me. I recently left it at someones house and was without it for over a week and it was dearly missed by my skin! But as soon as I added it back into my daily skincare routine my skin seemed back to normal almost instantly! It is such an amazing skin treatment product.

The whole of the Effaclar range from La Roche-Posay is targeted for problem skin. The second product from that range that I love is the Effaclar Mat, this is essentially a moisturiser with a matte finish. I have fairly combination skin so I love that with this moisturiser I can get the added hydration yet it keeps my skin balanced. It has a really lightweight formula and sits perfectly under makeup, so is ideal for use in the morning. However it has to be noted that it lacks SPF.

Next up is Toleraine Riche, which is a really hydrating, soothing moisturiser. It has a thick creamy texture and is very soothing on the skin at night. It is marketed for intolerant, dry and irritated skin and is meant to hydrate the skin whilst also protecting it. I would 100% agree with this statement. Also a little goes a long way with this product, if I feel like my skin needs a bit of added hydration or is a bit irritated for one reason or another I massage this into my skin and by morning the problem is gone, and I mean completely gone. It works wonders over night.

My final skincare favourite from La Roche Posay is their Eau Thermale Spray. Now I know some of you may be saying, why pay for water in an aerosol? Well, yes it may seem like a bit of a gimmick but it is enriched with essential minerals and nutrients for the skin to remain healthy and balanced. It can be used as a toner as the second step in your skincare routine or as a general refresher throughout the day (especially good in the summer months or on holiday!). The mist is also incredibly fine, meaning you don't get water dripping off your face! You can also use it to set your makeup, to lock everything into place, alternatively if you feel like you are looking a little 'cakey' and want to un-do that look, a spritz of this will make your skin look very natural again. So yes, its mineral water in a spray, but you'd be surprised how often this will come in handy! I keep one in my bag as I never know when I'll need it!

I recently tried the La Roche-Posay Physiological Cleansing Milk. This is the only product from the range that I've tried that I really didn't like. I think I should have perhaps done some more research on the product before buying it as it is formulated for dry to very dry skin sensitive skin, and I bought it to use when my skin is going through one of its very dry phases, I do also have fairly sensitive skin too so thought it would be handy to swap with my normal cleanser every now and then. But for me it just left too much of an oily residue on the skin. I thought it would be more of a naturally moisturising facial wash but it left a layer over the skin and I got to the point where I would actually go in with another cleanser to wash that off. Overall, it really didn't suit my skin type and I wouldn't repurchase it. Perhaps it would work for someone who has really dry skin all the time? But for me it was a big no.

Now onto other French pharmacy brands. The Avene Eau Thermale is much the same as the one from La Roche-Posay, so if you can't get your hands on that one then give this one ago. There isn't really that much of a difference between the two if I'm honest - I love both!

I've already dedicated a whole post to probably the most well known, and well loved, French skincare item Bioderma (link here). It can be difficult to source in the UK but it is sold on Escentual and can be found in a number of London Pharmacies such as Zest which is located very close to Oxford Street, but it can also be bought off of their website. I soak a cotton pad in a little Bioderma and press it gently onto my eyes to remove all makeup, including waterproof mascara. It works very quickly and feels just like water. For more of my thoughts on Bioderma head over to my post on it, linked above.

Moving onto Ren, I've only tried one of their products so far and I have to say it was love at first use. I'd been wanting to try a higher end cleanser for a while and when perusing the isles of Zest Pharmacy the other week I decided to give their Rosa Centifolia Gel Cleanser a go. I usually go for cream cleansers, occasionally the odd gel, but I now think I have been converted to a gel cleanser lover. It left my skin feeling so clean, as if I'd just had a full on spa facial yet, really fresh and not at all stripped, it felt nicely balanced. I'm now very excited to try some more from the range!

And last but not least my little pot of lip heaven. The Nuxe Reve de Miel lip balm that I mentioned here. It smells deliciously like honey, as the name would suggest - for those of you who speak French! It isn't a particularly glossy lip balm, I would almost go as far as saying it was matte in finish yet still really hydrates and soothes the lips, because of this it looks very natural.

Overall, I've been very pleasantly surprised with the quality of these French products, and will be looking to try more in the future!

Do you have any French skincare product recommendations? I'd love to hear them - leave them in the comments below!

My makeup storage and organisation

Makeup storage and organisation blog posts and videos are some of my favourite to read or watch. They are generally very highly requested and well loved as people, including myself, love to be nosy and have a bit of a snoop around other people's stuff! I like to think I'm a pretty organised person and love getting inspiration on how to best store things, being a beauty blogger this is mainly for my makeup and skincare.

My makeup storage has definitely changed over the years, I'll insert a couple of pictures here to show just how much it has changed....

So, at one point, many years ago, my makeup all fit into one makeup bag... what happened between then and now? Far too many makeup shopping sprees - that's what! Then it got moved into the top drawer of my dresser and was separated by boxes, this really wasn't the best storage method as the drawer was too deep and it meant I had things piled on top of one another making it harder to see what I had. So basically I stuck to the basics and didn't really use what I had. As you can see from the picture below it was really disorganised. I also used a clear acrylic stand for my most used bits and bobs on top of the dresser alongside my makeup brushes and some other beauty bits I was using at the time.

After my collection grew even more I decided it was finally time to invest in something a little more aesthetically pleasing. I'd been eyeing up the Ikea Alex Drawer unit for a year or two by this point. It's very well loved by beauty bloggers, I'd be surprised if you haven't seen it floating around beauty blogs and YouTube channels by now! But when it came down to it I just couldn't justify spending £90 on a 9 drawer unit. So after umming and ahhing for a year or so I decided that I would buy two of the Alex 5 drawer units and a table top from Ikea too, essentially making it into a dressing table with plenty of storage underneath!

The drawer units cost £60 each (link here) (although they now seem to be reduced to £50 so if you want to buy them I'd get onto the Ikea website quickly!) and the table top cost £25 (link here). The mirror and chair are also from Ikea, the chair I already had and the mirror I recently bought on my latest trip to the storage heaven that is Ikea (which I'm sure will be easy to find on their website). The drawer units came in flat-pack form and were relatively simple to put together however it was slightly time consuming!

I keep makeup in the upper-most two drawers on each side. In the other drawers I keep skincare, bodycare, hair products, and hot tools such as straighters, curling wands etc. and a drawer for makeup and wash bags. This means that as my collection grows I will have room to accommodate for it by moving about the contents of the other drawers.

I keep my makeup brushes in various pots and mugs on the top of the dressing table along with an acrylic letter rack which I used to store my large palettes. On the right hand side I keep my most used hair and body products so they are at easy reach... essentially meaning I actually remember to use them more often!

If you'd like to see an in depth post on the contents of each drawer then let me know in the comments.

Lipbalms - is it just me who hoards them?

Something I never seem to be without is lipbalm. I keep them all over the house and always have at LEAST one with me every time I go out. Is this just me? I don't even feel like I use them all that much however it seems to be an item I can't bare to be without.

I keep one by my bed, in each bathroom, on my dressing table, on my desk, in my car and I always have a ridiculous number of lip products in general in my handbag... somehow they just accumulate until I realised I have over 10 lip products in my bag. At this point I tend to do a bit of a sort out and then the process begins again.

I'm not even really someone who gets particularly dry lips, more so in the winter and when I'm ill. Still I never seem to be without one!

I have a few favourites - Lanolips lip balms are the best! They are ultra moisturising and very glossy! For times when I want something a little less glossy, I love a bit of the French Pharmacy classic, Nuxe Reve de Miel Lip Balm (for those of you who don't speak French, its essentially made from honey, thus having a delicious honey scent!) A few other favourites are Burt's Bees, EOS, Maybelline BabyLips, The Body Shop or Nivea lip butters, Soap and Glory's 'A Great Kisser' or the classic Vaseline in its variety of shades and scents.

I'd love to hear your recommendations!

Pamper Night Must Haves

It's very easy to slip into a rut of simply taking makeup off, cleansing, moisturising and going to bed. I am guilty of this occasionally, so to compensate I like to dedicate one evening a week to pamper my skin and hair. I tend to pamper my body more often funnily enough, especially in the summer months as I regularly exfoliate and slap on a generous amount of body butter (see my last post on The Body Shop Early Harvest Raspberry for more info). But when it comes to using face and hair masks I often forget unless I dedicate a specific slot of time for it.

I put on some chilled out music to make the waiting process in between masks less boring, I also tend to scroll through Instagram when waiting for a face mask to dry for example (trust me, the time passes in no time at all this way!).

So onto the products I use! I regularly exfoliate my skin with a manual scrub and use my Clarasonic Mia to cleanse my skin on a daily basis so when it comes to treating my skin I find I need a clarifying mask and a hydrating one. I used to be very un-loyal to face masks, probably because I hadn't found 'the one' yet. At the moment I am loving the Una Brennan Super Facialist Tea Flower Deep Cleanse Purifying Mask. It is really inexpensive as it can be bought in Boots and Superdrug and the range is often on special offer, so look out for that! It has a thick texture and applies really smoothly. It cleanses my skin of all impurities and stubborn dirt and oil that builds up that a regular cleanser fails to remove fully. I also like the Origins Clear Improvements Active Charcoal Mask, which is a pricier item but is an excellent option!

I like to follow this up with a soothing hydrating mask to replenish and re-balance my skin. My absolute holy-grail option for this is the Origins Drink Up Intensive Hydrating Mask. It smells really spa like and soothes my skin after the harsher deep cleansing mask. This is the intensive version of the mask which means you leave it on over night, so in effect its just like an amped up version of a night cream. Its a real treat for your skin and the next morning I wash my face as normal to reveal a brighter, more even skin tone. My skin honestly glows the next day in that ''I've had 9 hours sleep and my skin is naturally this glowy and nice'' kinda way! Nothing hydrates my skin quite like this Origins mask. To get even better results I apply the Indeed Labs Hydraluron Serum before this mask. This serum has hyaluronic acid in and can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water meaning that whatever moisturiser (or hydrating mask) you layer on top works 100 times better! I use this either with a normal night cream or this mask and it really helps to give you fully hydrated plumed up skin.

Now onto the topic of hair! I use a number of leave in conditioners as I battle with dry ends and a lack of shine in my hair but once a week I love to treat my hair with a really intensive condition to repair and protect it. Recently I've been loving the cult favourite, the Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque. Although rather pricy at around £26, it is so worth it! I wasn't sure if I believed the hype from all of the many beauty bloggers and vloggers but once you try this product you will agree with me! Its like you're hair is brand spanking new after using it! My hair is less dry, shinier, has more volume, is easier to manage in general and overall my hair looks 10 times healthier after using this wonder hair mask. I would 100% recommend it despite the hefty cost it comes with, for a more budget friendly however I also love the Aussie 3 Minute Miracles Range of  deep conditioners. I apply this to freshly washed hair and brush it through with my Tangle Teaser to evenly distribute the product through the lengths of my hair ( not at the roots as it will create product build up and may make your hair a tad  greasy!), I then put my hair into a bun on the top of my head and after 5-10 minutes rinse it off to reveal beautifully conditioned hair.

Personally I think it's really important to take some time out to yourself to look after our face, body and hair.

Hope you enjoyed this post - let me know your pamper night must haves below in the comments or on twitter @OliviaEBeauty

Raspberry Goodness

Let's be honest, although it's meant to solely be about the product on the inside and all that, I know I'm not the only one who likes aesthetically pleasing packaging and the product itself to smell like heaven.

Well here you go, a body range in sleek and bold packaging that smells good enough to eat. Want to know what I'm talking about? The Early Harvest Raspberry range from the Body Shop of course!

I use the raspberry body scrub to get rid of all those dead skin cells and whilst doing the job perfectly it's still fairly gentle but also leaves the skin feeling moisturised rather than dry, tight and aggravated like some other body scrubs do. It has a unique jam-like consistency which is also fairly intriguing about this product!

Recently I've been following this with the body butter from the same range. I knew I already loved The Body Shop body butters and have tried many in the past but the raspberry one has to be my favourite scent so far! I honestly think this is the closest thing to what the taste/smell of a raspberry actually is, and that is rare with products as often they are reminiscent of the thing (e.g. a raspberry) but I find they never quite match up to the original, smell wise, whereas this does. It really is on point both with the product itself and also the heavenly smell.

I'd highly recommend going into the shop and giving the tester a good old sniff - it really is the perfect body combo!
